I saw my first Yellow Fringed Orchid of the season today. Until I moved here I wasn’t aware that orchids grow in the mountains and even later how many there are growing here. We have Showy Orchids, Lady Tresses (several varieties), Rattlesnake Plantain, Yellow Fringed, Lady Slippers, Crane Fly and I haven’t seen one but I’ve been told we have Purple Fringed Orchids. This seems pretty early in the season for Yellow Fringed and I saw 7 – 8 more in the same area. Hopefully that means it will be a banner year for them. I’m not really sure why they are called Yellow Fringed because every one I’ve seen has been orange.
